What to Look for on Food Labels

Do you know what to look for on food labels? I’m always trying to make the process of learning to eat healthfully faster and easier for those around me. What to look for on food labels is very important, so today, I want to share with you the three most important things to look for whenever you buy packaged food.

First and foremost, you do not want to pay attention to the front of the package. That is for advertising and marketing, and they do not need to tell the truth there. The job of the front of the package is to get you to notice it and be interested and impressed enough to decide to put it in your shopping cart.

The place where the big food companies mostly need to tell the truth is is on the back of the package. There are loop holes for them there too. The first to look at there is the ingredient list. Notice how long that list is. The optimal number of ingredients is no more than 5. You also want to look to see if any of the ingredients are things you could never pronounce and are probably chemical in nature. If the list of ingredients is long and you don’t recognize or can’t pronounce them, it’s in your best interest to put it back on the shelf.
