Eat to Beat the Blues

Is it possible to change your mood by changing your food? Can you eat to beat the blues? I mean, can you really affect a significant change?

My answer would be a resounding “yes” as I am living proof that you can absolutely do this! That is why I teach and write am devoted to guiding and helping people do what I did more than ten years ago.

I “disappeared” the chronic depression that had plagued my life for decades, and I lost twenty pounds. I did it accidentally and in just a few months.

Why would what most Americans eat affect their mood? It’s important to understand that here. The Standard American Diet, or SAD, as it is widely known, is characterized by high consumption of processed foods, refined sugars, unhealthy fats, and low fiber intake. The diet most Americans ascribe to has been linked to a host of health problems including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Recent research also suggests that the SAD can have a negative impact on your mood and your mental health.

Frequent consumption of refined sugars and processed foods can lead to spikes and crashes in blood sugar levels which can affect your mood and energy levels. An additional fun fact about this diet is that high consumption of unhealthy fats (also part of the SAD) can lead to inflammation in the brain. When your brain becomes inflamed, it can manifest as…
